When police told Rashon Nelson and Donte Robinson to leave the Philadelphia @Starbucks location they’d just arrived at minutes earlier for a real estate business meeting, the two men were confused. They weren’t even sure law enforcement were there to speak to them until police approached their table. Rather than answer their questions and assess the situation, Philadelphia police officers handcuffed and arrested them without so much as reading them their Miranda rights, let alone informing them why they were being arrested. Since going viral, the video of their arrest has galvanized the country to examine right versus wrong in cases where racial profiling occurs – particularly when stakeholders like law enforcement rationalize their actions in claiming they had legal authority to carry out the arrest as justification for colluding with a now-terminated Starbucks manager to racially profile and arrest two black men who did nothing more than ask to use a bathroom and subsequently ask why they were being singled out and asked to leave an establishment they were meeting someone at.
