It Would Only Take 30 Minutes for a North Korean Missile to Hit the United States-blogged by @thereal__bee ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ As North Korean missiles launch across the world, two experts spoke with The #AssociatedPress about how long it would take for a missile to reach the United States. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ David Wright, senior scientist and co-director of the Global Security Program of the Union of Concerned Scientists, and analyst Markus Schiller, of ST Analytics, estimate that it could take about 30-40 minutes for a North Korean missile to hit #SanFrancisco or the nation's capital, #WashingtonDC. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ The U.S. relies heavily on their Ground-based Missile Defense system to prevent attacks. However critics say the GMD, which cost $40 billion, has experienced six out of nine failures with its test intercepts. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ The Union of Concerned Scientists wrote in a report last year, "In its current form, strategic missile defense is a waste of resources at best and dangerous at worst,...It is not a reliable defense under real-world conditions; by promoting it as a solution to nuclear conflict, U.S. officials complicate diplomatic efforts abroad, and perpetuate a false sense of security that could harm the U.S. public.” ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ In addition to stopping missiles though, there's also a question about what the president should do in situations as such. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ “The timelines are short,” Wright said. “Even for long-range missiles, there are a lot of steps that go into detecting the launch and figuring out what it is, leaving the president with maybe 10 minutes to decide whether to launch a retaliatory strike.”
